132nd Square Park
sustainable and inclusive park shelters

Schemata Workshop was asked to join the team working on improvements to the city’s 132nd Square Park improvements. In addition to a new restroom building, the scope includes designs for new picnic shelters, with a design concept partially inspired by the existing shelter on the site. The shelter was designed and built as a community project, and holds special meaning for the park’s users. The resulting design includes built-up wood columns that appear delicate and light, supporting the angled shed roof forms like a tree canopy. The restroom building includes one men’s, one women’s, and two non-gendered individual restrooms, as well as a maintenance room. The end result is an energy-efficient and sustainable park building with lots of natural light and durable, cost-effective materials that integrates perfectly with the overall park design.
