Schemata Workshop has been working with the Skyway community since 2013 on the planning for a community center. In 2021, we were brought it to continue our work with the community when the local US Bank in the neighborhood was closing and offered to donate their building to the community as a resource center. This resource center will be able to meet several of the programmatic goals of the community center feasibility study, such as having training/teaching space, a place for healthcare - including mental health, opportunities for community grassroots organizations, and community meeting space. Based on this, the County agreed that a portion of the funding dedicated to a community center should be applied to this project. We worked for over a year in close partnership on a community design process to develop a plan to convert this former bank, located at the center of the Skyway community into a true community space. Construction is currently underway with the grand opening expected in the fall of 2024.
